Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) National Secretariat Director-General and Foreign Affairs Undersecretary Laura Q. Del Rosario served as resource speaker at a lecture-forum titled “The Philippine Priorities and the APEC Agenda” last September 29 at the Development Academy of the Philippines (DAP)  in Pasig. The event was  attended by government organization representatives and DAP officers and staff.

Usec. Del Rosario shared the Philippines’ priorities for APEC 2015 which are: 1) Investing in  Human Capital Development; (2) Fostering Small and Medium Enterprises’ (SMEs) Participation in Regional and Global Markets; (3) Building Sustainable and Resilient Communities; and (4) Enhancing the Regional Economic Integration Agenda.

She said that APEC traces its roots to a   political agenda in Australia which was then   adopted by its member nations in 1989. APEC aims to foster free trade and economic prosperity among its member-economies in the Asia-Pacific region.

This year, with the Philippines as host country, APEC 2015 will focus on the promotion and advancement of inclusive growth in Asia and the Pacific, hence, the theme, “Building inclusive economies, building better lives.”

“In diplomacy everything is communicated in symbols,” added Usec. Del Rosario as she presented the Philippine APEC logo and theme. She also explained and cited situational examples for each of the three pillars of APEC which include Trade and Investment Liberalization; Business   Facilitation; and  Economic and  Technical  Cooperation

APEC is a multilateral international organization which seeks to foster free trade and economic prosperity among its member-economies in the Asia-Pacific region and is composed of   Australia, Brunei, Canada, Chile, and People Republic of China, Chinese Taipe, HongKong,  Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand,  Papua New Guinea, Peru, the Philippines, Russia, Singapore, South Korea, Thailand, the United States of America, and Vietnam.

The forum was organized by the DAP Council of Fellows to increase awareness on the APEC and know how the Philippines can    strengthen relations with its Asian neighbors. (GTurano)
