Phil-HECS Presidential Leadership Program kicks off with first course (August 22, 2016)

The Development Academy of the Philippines, in partnership with the Commission on Higher Education, recently conducted the first Presidential Leadership course, kicking off a series of six courses under the Philippine Higher Education Career System (Phil-HECS) Presidential Leadership Program.

Entitled “Leading a Globally Competitive Higher Education Institution” with the theme “Emerging Trends and Challenges in Internationalization and HEI Competitiveness,” the course was participated in by 30 presidents and chancellors from various state universities and colleges all over the country from July 28-30, 2016 at the Limketkai Luxe Hotel in Cagayan de Oro City.

To be globally competitive

The course aimed to teach the participants how to be globally competitive and how to utilize information and communications technology not just as a tool for teaching but as a tool to create knowledge leading to innovation.

Dr. Luis Maria Calingo, current president of the Holy Angel University in Pampanga, served as the faculty-in-charge and resource person for the session on Comprehensive Internationalization in the Context of Philippine Higher Education Institutions. Dr. Emmanuel Lallana, chief executive of IdeaCorp, meanwhile, lectured on ICT and its role in management, learning, and knowledge creation.

Study visits

The three-day course included study visits to the Mindanao University of Science and Technology (MUST) in Cagayan de Oro City and to the Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT) in Iligan City. The two state universities were selected to impart their respective institutions’ experiences and milestones in practicing internationalization.

The course “Leading a Globally Competitive Higher Education Institution” is actually the first of six courses lined up under the Phil-HECS Presidential Leadership Program, a professional advancement and career development program for incumbent SUC presidents. The program is a project of the Commission on Higher Education and the DAP in partnership with the Philippine Association of State Universities and Colleges (PASUC).
